ยินดีต้อนรับทุกท่านสู่ Journal Club ของคณะสังคมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร

เวทีเสวนาเพื่อส่งเสริมและพัฒนาทักษะทางวิชาการภาษาอังกฤษครั้งที่ 6 นี้ขอเชิญชวนผู้ที่สนใจศึกษางานเขียนของนักวิชาการด้านประวัติศาสตร์ที่ชื่อว่า Vinayak Chaturvedi  ในงานเขียนชิ้นสำคัญเรื่อง "Peasant Pasts: History and Memory in Western India" นำเสวนาโดยกลุ่มนิสิตปริญญาเอกสาขาเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ศึกษา คณะสังคมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร 

การเสวนาจะจัดขึ้นในวันพุธที่ 23 กันยายน 2558 ณ ห้องประชุมราชพฤกษ์ คณะสังคมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร เวลา 17.00 น. เป็นต้นไป

Vinayak Chaturvedi เป็นรองศาสตราจารย์ด้านประวัติศาสตร์จากภาควิชาประวัติศาสตร์ ที่ University of California, Irvine

เกี่ยวกับหนังสือเล่มนี้ 

Peasant Pasts is an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to writing histories of peasant politics, nationalism, and colonialism. Vinayak Chaturvedi's analysis provides an important intervention in the social and cultural history of India by examining the nature of peasant discourses and practices during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Through rigorous archival study and fieldwork, Chaturvedi shows that peasants in Gujarat were active in the production and circulation of political ideas, establishing critiques of the state and society while promoting complex understandings of political community. By turning to the heartland of M.K. Gandhi's support, Chaturvedi shows that the vast majority of peasants were opposed to nationalism in the early decades of the twentieth century. He argues that nationalists in Gujarat established power through the use of coercion and violence, as they imagined a nation in which they could dominate social relations. Chaturvedi suggests that this littletold story is necessary to understand not only anticolonial nationalism but the direction of postcolonial nationalism as well.

เวทีเสวนาเพื่อส่งเสริมและพัฒนาทักษะทางวิชาการภาษาอังกฤษครั้งที่ 5 นี้จะเชิญชวนผู้ที่สนใจศึกษางานเขียนของนักวิชาการคนสำคัญที่ชื่อว่า James C. Scott ในงานเขียนชิ้นสำคัญเล่มหนึ่งที่ชื่อว่า "Seeing Like a State" (1999) นำเสวนาโดยกลุ่มนิสิตปริญญาเอกสาขาเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ศึกษา คณะสังคมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร

In this wide-ranging and original book, James C. Scott analyzes failed cases of large-scale authoritarian plans in a variety of fields. He argues that centrally managed social plans derail when they impose schematic visions that do violence to complex interdependencies that are not -- and cannot be -- fully understood. Further the success of designs for social organization depends on the recognition that local, practical knowledge is as important as formal, epistemic knowledge. The author builds a persuasive case against "development theory" and imperialistic state planning that disregards the values, desires, and objections of its subjects. And in discussing these planning disasters, he identifies four conditions common to them all: the state's attempt to impose administrative order on nature and society; a high-modernist ideology that believes scientific intervention can improve every aspect of human life; a willingness to use authoritarian state power to effect large-scale innovations; and a prostrate civil society that cannot effectively resist such plans.

การเสวนาเพื่อส่งเสริมทักษะในการอ่านงานวิชาการภาษาอังกฤษครั้งที่ 4 นี้จะเชิญชวนผู้อ่านศึกษางานเขียนของนักเศรษฐศาสตร์คนสำคัญที่ชื่อว่า Friedrich August von Hayek (F. A. Hayek) ในงานเขียนชิ้นสำคัญที่เป็นรากฐานของลัทธิ Neoliberalism ชื่อว่า "The Road to Serfdom" (1944)

การเสวนาจะจัดขึ้นในวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 20 พฤศจิกายน 2557 เวลา 17.30 น. ณ ห้องประชุมราชพฤกษ์ คณะสังคมศาสตร์ โดยเชิญชวนผู้ร่วมเสวนาให้อ่านเฉพาะ "บทที่ 5 Planning and Democracy" เพื่อเป็นการฝึกฝนการอ่านจับใจความ และการอ่านเชิงวิพากษ์ และเป็นฐานในการแลกเปลี่ยนกับผู้เข้าร่วมเสวนาท่านอื่นๆ

3rd Journal Club: Remembering October Incidents

Welcome to the Social Sciences Journal Club! 

Our 3rd meeting will take place on Wednesday 29 October 2014 at 5 pm. The usual venue is Ratchapruek conference room, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Naresuan University.

This time we will recall (but many of you might be the first time!) the October incidents of 1973 and 1976. Our short "compulsory" reading is Jeffrey Race (1975)'s "Thailand in 1974: A New Constitution". This paper offers you a concise summary of Thai politics in the aftermath of 14 October 1973. What had happened in a year later the mass victory in Bangkok?

Nevertheless, we have an "optional" paper by Anonymous (1976)'s on Military Coup of 6 October 1976.

Please bear in mind that you need to read a compulsory reading before attending the journal club. Once you try your best to read it, you will gradually learn English and will have systematically thinking and analytical skills.

2nd Journal Club: Thailand and Precarious Work

Welcome to the Journal Club!

Our 2nd meeting will take place on Saturday 27 September 2014 at Ratchapruek Meeting Room, the Faculty of Social Sciences from 5 - 6.30 pm.

This time we will read Kevin Hewison and Worradul Tularak (2013) distinguished paper entitled "Thailand and Precarious Work: An Assessment". What is precariousness? What is precarious work? How about the precarious worker? Is this a problem? And is this matter to our life? You need to find out from the paper!

Again, you should keep in mind that you need to read the paper prior to the seminar. Once you try your best to read it, you will enjoy discussing and contributing some comments to our academic community.
